Here are just some of the big events happening in 2017…
Brixham is one of Britain’s biggest fishing ports. And you can get behind the scenes and experience the sights and sounds of the town’s fish market with Brixham Fish Market Tours. Get ready for an early start (6am) and see the hustle and bustle of the world famous Brixham Fish Market, culminating in a delicious fish breakfast at Rockfish. The tours take place twice monthly, starting on April 19th.
If you consider yourself something of a foodie then head over to the Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink, which runs from April 29th-1st May. The Festival is held each year in the cultural quarter of the city, spread across the courtyard and grounds of the 1000-year-old cathedral. The area is one of the city’s most scenic, and perfect for a week of celebration of food and drink.
Brixham Pirate Festival returns in 2017 for another weekend of salty seadog fun and games! Taking place from 29th April-1st May, the festival is one of the most popular events in the South Devon What’s On diary. The Brixham Pirate Festival sees locals and visitors alike dress up as pirates for a day of family fun and entertainment. Remember to bring your costume!
Dartmouth is a beautiful coastal town and should definitely be on your list of places to visit. It’s popular Dart Music Festival, from 12th-14th May will see over 100 performances throughout the town, spanning almost every musical genre – and it’s all free!
The Devon County Show is billed as ‘Devon’s big day out’ and is the county’s flagship event. It’s a showcase for aspects of life and work in the county as well as entertainment, shopping and good food. Head over to Exeter’s Westpoint Arena for the show, which takes place from 18th-20th May.
Brix Fest is back for 2017, from 27th-29th May. BrixFest enters 2017 in its sixth year having firmly established itself as one of Brixham’s leading festivals. From live music, stalls and stands to a grand fireworks display and sailing regattas – the festival celebrates all that is great about Brixham!
Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta will take place from 27th-28th May: The Brixham Heritage Sailing Regatta has its roots in the Sailing Trawler races that have been held in Torbay since the early 1800’s. In 1914, King George V presented the Perpetual Challenge Cup also popularly known as the ‘King George V Cup’ – it will be incorporated into part of the Brix Fest event.
The popular Brixham Trawler Race takes place on June 17th and sees skippers dress their boats with bunting before they battle it out in a two lap race around the Bay. At the same time there’s fun and festivities on the harbour quayside to raise money for local charities.
Come and watch or even take part in the Torbay Half Marathon in nearby Paignton! Held on June 25th, it will see the 26th running of this very popular seaside event; with demand for places steadily growing, early entry to this event is advised, as we may well be full before race day. The Torbay Half Marathon route is a traffic free two lap route which starts and finishes on Paignton seafront, taken in the stunning coastal views across Torbay.
See some of the best military and civilian airshow performers at the Torbay Air Show in Paignton. Held on 3-4th June, the show will be complimented by a host of activities on the ground.
There’s 9 days of fulfilled family entertainment on offer at Torbay Carnival in Paignton. From live music to car shows, the carnival is great fun for all. The event culminates with a giant and colourful procession.
Paington Regatta is a great fay of family fun on Paignton Green featuring rowing, athletics, cricket, tennis as well as live music, RNLI and coastguard demonstrations, fairground rides and a fireworks finale.
Torbay Steam Fair, on the 4th-6th August, is one of the biggest events on the English Riviera calendar, attracting hundreds of visitors and exhibitors from across the South West. Situated just outside Brixham, this 3-day event is a must for the family, with classic vehicles, working steam engines and a wide variety of displays.
Torbay Royal Regatta is spread over 5 days is one of the region’s marquee events. There’s a 10k run, the popular sailing events, a huge fireworks display and, of course, the Red Arrows display across the bay – an event not to be missed!
