The Torbay region is famed for its fantastic beaches, with so many wonderful stretches of sand just waiting to be explored.
Whether you prefer quiet coves or huge expanses of sandy beach, there’s something for you and your family in the region.
And now the quality of the English Riviera’s beaches has been recognised with 10 being awarded coveted Blue Flag status.
Brixham’s Breakwater beach is one of those 10 to recognised with the award, along with a Seaside Award, both of which are run by Keep Britain Tidy.
The internationally recognised Blue Flag award is given to beaches that comply with a number of criteria covering environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, safety and services, reports the Totnes Times.
Simon Wallace, operations manager for ¬beaches and coastline at Torbay Council, said: “Winning as many as 10 Seaside Awards and three Blue Flag Awards is fantastic news for the Bay. It really highlights the great work of our resort services team, who are dedicated to enabling visitors and residents alike to enjoy our fantastic beaches with the confidence that they’re clean, well-managed and safe places to spend time and have fun.
“I would also like to thank Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts for their support, which has meant we’ve been able to continue entering these awards.
“This enables us to continue to show that in Torbay we’re at the forefront of beach -management in the UK.”
Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton said: “It’s great news for -holidaymakers, overseas visitors and businesses that rely on coastal tourism that we’ve been able to award so many flags this year.
“The success of our beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is a real testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches, from beach managers to local people and businesses.
“When you enjoy a day on the beach flying a Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you’re on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country.”
